EM Germany Newsletter CW 19/2022 | Looking back at Europe Week

Germany continues to struggle over the question of how to support Ukraine. An „open letter from intellectuals“ strongly conveyed the impression that Ukraine should accept defeat if necessary. A fatal sign.

But fortunately, there is a counter-initiative that demonstrates its full solidarity with the country under attack. Because Russia is attacking Europe’s freedom and democracy as a whole in Ukraine. Our President, Linn Selle, is one of the first signatories of this initiative. She is not only taking a clear stance against the aggressor but follows the tradition of EM Germany’s founding generation of 1949, which shaped the German Constitution.

Because, as Carlo Schmid described in his memoirs, „at that time, the partners expected from Germany, due to its history, the liveliest participation in the efforts to create a Europe of freedom and justice“. It is precisely this European state goal of Germany that obliges the country to fully support the resistance against Russian aggression.

At the same time, the German government must stand by its commitments and proactively work for a democratic and effective Europe. This applies both to the Council of Europe, which can finally be strengthened in its democratic DNA after Russia’s suspension, and to the EU, which has with the 49 proposals of the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE) a concrete guideline that is overall in line with EM Germany’s political demands. It is just a pity that already 13 member states have committed with their No to EU treaty changes, thus depriving the proposals of the necessary far-sightedness.

As our infographic shows, the CoFoE proposals can only become political reality if the EU institutions use all options of the existing EU treaties in the implementation and at the same time – as demanded by the European Parliament, France, and the German coalition agreement – openly examine the necessity of a European Convention. New impulses such as Macron’s proposal of a European Political Community as an enlarged Union with the democratic EU neighbouring states are therefore welcome.

Kind regards
