EM Germany Newsletter CW 25/2021 | German Members in the plenary of the EU-Future Conference

A clear objective and agenda with no taboos, a realistic timetable of two years, transparent and the solid involvement of representative actors: these are the four criteria which according to EM Germany will determine the sustainable success of the Conference on the Future of Europe.

On Saturday, the plenary, the heart of the Conference on the Future of Europe, met for the first time and set out the next steps for the dialogue. As our infographic shows, key decision-makers from the various levels of German politics and society have been nominated a plenary delegates. EM Germany is represented via its international association, EMI, and indirectly by its board member and EESC member Christian Moos. Regrettably, the representative of the German citizens‘ panels and events for the intended bottom-up dialogue was appointed top down by the German government in an opaque procedure.

Nonetheless, together with these delegates in the Conference plenary, especially those of our member organisations and our parent federation, we will promote the dialogue of the Conference on the Future of Europe within the rich network of German associations and federations. We will do this in the coming months by using our established formats, including EM Germany’s De-Briefings. Because it is only together with our 257 member organisations that we will be able to raise public awareness in Germany of this crucial process that aims to set the EU’s future priorities.

I am also pleased that after today’s launch of the CDU/CSU programme, all EM Germany member parties will have presented their manifestos for the upcoming Bundestag election. Having read all programmes, one can identify a clear commitment to a genuine debate on the future of Europe. We are sure that our „parties“ will promote these European policy demands in their election campaigns. We are hoping for a media coverage that critically includes European policy and, hence, a new federal government that engages in the Conference in order to advance European policy beyond the French presidential election campaign next spring.

The contest has begun; located in Europe’s centre, we in Germany should be actively involved in this dialogue.

I wish you a wonderful week!

Yours

Dr Linn Selle

#EBDFokus: German Members in the plenary of the EU-Future Conference

The Conference on the Future of Europe is a public debate in all member states on the future shaping and direction of the European Union. Next to the online platform, many national events and citizens‘ panels, the Plenary, the centrepiece of the Conference will discuss in cooperation with the Executive Committee on how the EU should look like in the future. On 19 June 2021,  delegated members from politics, social forces and citizens met for the plenary meeting. The #EBDGrafik from mid-May shows the exact composition of the Plenary. The new #EBDGrafik of the week sets the focus on the German members of the Plenary. +++ The Conference on the Future of Europe is also of key importance for EM Germany’s member parties: CDU/CSU has not yet published its party programme at this stage, however, according to the draft, the Conference on the Future of Europe represents an departure towards fundamental EU reformsBündnis90/Die Grünen hopes that the „Conference on the Future of the EU“ will provide a great opportunity to develop EU reforms together with citizens and representative institutions. The results of the Conference are to be implemented in a binding manner within the framework of European legislation, including treaty changes. SPD expects from the Conference that it initiates a broad debate and that its outcomes will be implemented. The programme of FDP underlines a clear goal: The EU is to be reformed institutionally in order to make it closer to the citizens and in order to strengthen its capability to act. This also includes treaty changes. Volt Germany generally wants a debate among all citizens about the future of the EU, which is to be initiated, among other things, within the framework of the CoFoE. In their programme, the Free Voters also advocate for EU reforms in the interest of the citizens. In particular, they focus on more democracy, transparency and a new distribution of competences. +++ EM Germany accompanies the Conference on the Future of Europe closely with events, infographics and background discussions +++
