EM Germany Newsletter CW 33/2021 | Analysis of the elections programmes for the Bundestag election 2021

Germany’s future viability will also be decided in Europe – and the next federal government will be a decisive pacesetter in how the European concert develops. This is why the European policy demands in the parties‘ Bundestag election programmes should be all the more important to voters.

After all, the German position in the influential EU Council of Ministers will be decisive for defining Europe’s future. As our analysis of election programmes in the #EBDGrafik shows, there is consensus among our member parties on many EM Germany priorities. Diversity of opinions, however, becomes apparent on the topic of the future design of EU finance policy. Do we need new own resources in the EU budget? How should the Stability and Growth Pact develop? In my view, the parties differ on this in particular.

Content comes first! Nevertheless, we should also consider the engine room of the German EU policy, its instruments and procedures. The current set-up of the European policy coordination of the German federal government appears too opaque and prone to departmental and party struggles. At the same time, Germany cannot afford further strategic fatigue or restraint – as it has been the case at the Conference on the Future of Europe. We expect courage for change from the incoming government! From many discussions in recent months we have recognised that we are on the right track with our inclusive modern German European policy.

Considering how the German and European ability to perform in the future are closely intertwined, we want the new federal government to have a strong European plan that is characterised by courage for European impulses and a comprehensible democratic culture of responsibility.

I wish you a wonderful week!

Yours

Dr Linn Selle
