EM Germany Newsletter CW 37/2021 | Europe in the 2021 federal election

Last week began on a hopeful note. Hopeful that the Bundestag election campaign has finally picked up some European political pace. In the public debates, the parties did emphasise European dimensions in fiscal, security and climate politics.

However, who then heard the questions asked at the election triell on Sunday – the debate with the largest reach on German television – must have gotten the impression that Germany is not part of the European Union. Moreover, considering that one of the candidates will most likely represent Germany in the European Council in 2022, one may ask whether the public broadcasting unit lived up to its promise of covering all political fields informatively and critically that evening. At least there was some internal criticism.

At the same time, though, our EM Germany analysis of the election programmes proves that our member parties show clear preferences in European politics and deal with European solution constructively above polemic. Fiscal and budgetary policy, as well as the future of the Stability- and Growth Pact, are nevertheless controversial distinctions between them. Moreover, the focus on the Conference on the Future of Europe in the new #EBDGrafik shows that parties similarly diverge in their concrete plans for a follow-up to the Conference.

What exactly will happen with the suggestions of the Conference? Do we need treaty changes or perhaps an extension to make the EU actionable? These questions will require addressing by the next federal government. On 26 September, we will have the choice to indicate the direction to go. We will support any new government to get ready for modern European politics.

I wish you a wonderful week!

Yours

Dr Linn Selle
