EM Germany Newsletter CW 41/2021 | EM Germany General Assembly 2021

We are all wondering: what will the „new normal“ be? Change scares many people. Pandemics, climate change, new party systems, corruption, nationalism, attacks on the primacy of European law… It is difficult to stay on course on the high seas. But for EM Germany, since its foundation in 1949, it has been clear that new challenges can only be mastered with a clear democratic and European course. EM Germany holds this course together with its 256 member organizations: Friday’s General Assembly is the democratic helmswoman that sets this course. EM Germany‘ Political Demands will be readjusted, the priorities will be expanded, the work priorities 2021/22 will be set. The largest network for European policy in Germany also contributes to the implementation. The new normal of the pandemic has expanded our reach. EM Germany breaks the Berlin bubble. Brussels, Belgrade, Bremen are active in our record number of 89 digital briefings and debates. We show: subject matter expertise and reach are not contradictory.

But we also go deep: we dive into the possible German European policy, which for us must become more modern, more predictable, more inclusive. Through our formatsprojects and networked expertise, we know what unused room for maneuver German European policy has. On the one hand, the German government has done a great job with NextGenerationEU. On the other hand, it has always acted with the handbrake on at the Conference on the Future of Europe. At the General Assembly #EBDmv, we will discuss how we need to shape Europe’s future with members of parliament and a representative of a major country. Our members‘ meeting this Friday will focus on clarification. On Friday and afterwards, our network, with foresight and commitment at the honorary helm, a professional team in the engine room and, of course, enormous expertise from the highly representative membership, will demonstrate European political accents that should encourage others who still cannot or do not want to believe in the new European normal. Others may be bobbing along despondently, but we are setting sail.
